Violin Repair Program - Tools

An array of hand tools such as planes, scrapers, chisels, and calipers are the foundation of the violin repairer’s collection. These tools are purchased by the students and are theirs to keep and use throughout their careers.

Students customize some tools, such as constructing their own knife handles, and care for others by keeping them sharp with Japanese water stones.

Three tool lists are issued: tools which should be purchased in advance of the school year, tools which are purchased on the first day of school, and tools which are purchased as needed during the year.

Professional quality tools are not inexpensive, but given their use over many years, they are a good value.
